Network coding is a new theory which changes the way we think of multicasting information in a point-to-point network. It finds applications in network multicast, distributed information storage, fault-tolerant computer communications, satellite communications, etc. A survey of this area, including the motivations, problem formulation, the basic results, and open problems, is presented.
