Next generation RAS platforms will evolve from their current role in the infrastructure as modem termination devices, to platforms that will accommodate voice, fax and data traffic providing both access to the PSTN and broadband wide area networks. This emerging multi-service concept is referred to as "Universal Port" capability. Universal port capability leverages Voice, Fax and Modem over IP (V/F/MoIP) technologies. This lecture will provide a top down approach, exploring from the service provider perspective, the new services that these next generation platforms will support, system capabilities, and also the system architecture alternatives available.
