Enhance System Reliability and Performance with the Virtex-5 System Monitor Function
Overview:
Virtex™-5 FPGAs employ innovative 65nm ExpressFabric™ architecture to deliver the industry's highest performance along with the lowest power consumption. However, along with these advances Moore's law also delivered some new challenges due to increasing power density. Designers must successfully manage these challenges to ensure high levels of system reliability and optimal design performance. Xilinx is helping designers to manage power-related design challenges with the new System Monitor function built into all Virtex-5 devices. Together with Xilinx design and debug tools, the System Monitor function facilitates easy access to accurate information about on-chip temperature and power supply voltages.

In this webcast you will see how to use the System Monitor function to obtain the best possible performance from your FPGA design and ensure reliable operation by enabling you to easily and more accurately evaluate thermal management solutions. You will also see how Virtex-5 FPGAs can take an active part in the overall system management.

Webcast attendees will learn how:
  • Temperature and power supply variation can affect system performance and reliability
  • The System Monitor function can help identify potential performance and reliability issues during development
  • To integrate the System Monitor function into system management infrastructure to ensure reliability after deployment

Who should attend:

  • Board designers and test engineers
  • ASIC and FPGA engineers
  • System architects
  • Engineering or technical managers
  • Quality assurance and reliability managers

Presenters:
Anthony Collins, Staff Marketing Engineer, Mixed Signal
Anthony has worked in the semiconductor industry in the US and Europe since 1994, where he held positions in Applications Engineering and Technical Marketing, specializing in mixed signal subsystems. He is currently working at Xilinx European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. Anthony holds patents in the areas of mixed signal and programmable logic implementation. He holds a Hons. Dip (EE) from the Dublin Institute of Technology and a BSc. (Eng.) from the University of Dublin, Trinity College.

Peter Alfke, Director, Applications Engineering, Xilinx, Inc.
Peter came to the United States in 1966, with a German MSEE degree and nine years experience in digital systems and circuit design at LM Ericsson and Litton Industries in Sweden. He has been manager, later director of applications engineering for over 30 years, at Fairchild, Zilog, AMD, and, since 1988, at Xilinx. He holds thirty patents, has written many Application Notes, presented at numerous design conferences, and has given many applications-oriented seminars in the United States and in Europe. He is an active participant in the best newsgroup for FPGA users, comp.arch.fpga.
