Today, video compression is deployed in many applications ranging from large form-factor devices like digital cinema; cable and satellite digital video transmissions for entertainment; low-latency applications like video telephony and telepresence; storage-constrained applications like surveillance and security; machine vision and recognition; and small form-factor and power-constrained devices like mobile handsets, mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and other handheld devices.

In many of these applications and end equipments, video plays a key role as a mechanism of information exchange, transmission or storage. In this article, we'll explore the complexities, trade-offs and design approaches for platform-based architectures, which are the building blocks for most of TI's video solutions.
