This Insight Report discusses the 70nm 1Gb DDR2 SDRAM from Elpida. In this device, smaller process geometries help to reduce power consumption in the chip, which enables less heat production, lower cooling costs and a quieter system operation. Interestingly, the 1Gb and 512Mb DDR2 SDRAM solutions from Elpida have very different layout designs. Semiconductor Insights hasn't seen this type of design layout before. According to Elpida, when compared to the fastest of the 90nm process DRAMs, the 70nm devices perform 30% faster as standalone memory, and also helps speed up graphics processing in today's popular chip sets with integrated graphics.

More details, and purchasable, in-depth technical analysis on the Intel 45nm Penryn Processor, is available from Semiconductor Insights.
