In order to move beyond 3G networks and develop new Next Generation Networking (NGN) systems, one must grapple with a new level of complexity in the design of NGN network and device infrastructure. This requires an approach that lends the system a high degree of testability and reuse, particularly for systems architecture and software development.

UML and SDL, the design languages used in the development of third generation systems, provide a documentation basis for NGN developers and engineers. This paper proposes using an integrated UML and SDL approach and introduces a design example featuring Telelogic solutions for Model Driven Development (MDD). It also shows how existing code-based methods can be introduced and incorporated into a design. The intent is not simply to talk about modeling, but to demonstrate that which will give designers an edge in building next generation systems.
