System-on-Chip (SoC) designers can now incorporate a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) in chip designs, eliminating the need for a separate integrated circuit (IC), and delivering significant power and cost savings. Digital and portable consumer electronics are the main target applications for this new technology.

This paper explains what HDMI is and provides a similar introduction to SoC technology, as well as an explanation of HDMI IP for SoCs. It also introduces the new HDMI 1.3 TX/RX Interface IP from MIPS, which addresses low-power portable applications by enabling incorporation of an HDMI interface in an SoC.
