After years of dominance by the PC and x86 architecture, the embedded industry may be experiencing a major shift to new technologies and applications, driven by the newly embraced embedded microprocessor. This paper introduces the basics of embedded microprocessors and systems and speculates on the next big phase of embedded technology, which will likely bring more system-on-a-chip designs as mainstream products.
