Only recently has it become practical to add wireless connectivity to highly constrained embedded applications. The development of inexpensive single-chip data radios has opened up entirely new application areas for wireless technology. In addition, advances in networking algorithms have made it possible to use these radios to develop useable, real-world communications solutions. This paper discusses the development of practical embedded wireless mesh networks as both a product of and a driving force behind these advances in wireless technology.
