Electric field imaging is not a new technology, but implementing and using it has just become much easier. The use of electric fields is typically found in nature to sense both qualitative and quantitative information about nearby objects. The applications of low-level electric field imaging are vast, but, until recently, have been restricted by the difficulty in implementing practical electric field systems. This paper explores how electric field sensing works and how today's designers can apply the technology to tomorrow's applications to create a safer, more intelligent world.
