Projections of billions of devices all happily connected via the Internet, providing unheard of business benefits have fallen very short. This paper examines the vision of pervasive device networking from both the business and technology sides. Reasons for the shortfall and the pitfalls of current thinking are viewed from both a technology and business viewpoint.
