This paper is about the trade-off and evaluation criteria that a typical development organization must consider when deciding whether to take the Bluetooth specification and implement everything from scratch or to buy a reusable piece of intellectual property for integration into the selected products or systems.

The first part of the paper provides a broad overview of the basic features and capabilities within the Bluetooth specification; the second explores the parameters that must be addressed when evaluating various alternative solutions for Bluetooth-enabling your products or basic platforms. The third part presents a typical user-case featuring a reusable Bluetooth Baseband Intellectual Property, using Ericsson Bluetooth Solutions as an example.
