Interpreting the problem in terms of statistical risk, an approach and two efficient algorithms are suggested for efficiently quantizing a parametric source with unknown statistics using a minimax criterion. Unlike universal quantizers, the method and algorithms achieve their optimal performance on a fixed dimension basis.
