With the increasing spread of Internet technology, with its protocols and services based on TCP/IP, the Ethernet infrastructure is also being increasingly extended. Today there is virtually no area in the industrial environment that cannot by reached by an Ethernet/Internet connection. And, if by chance no direct Ethernet connection should be available somewhere, it is usually still possible to make a PPP-connection by telephone/modem.
