DESCRIPTION This class covers electromagnetic noise and how to design circuits and shielding to avoid it. It presents the sources of noise and the mechanisms for noise energy transmission and coupling; these mechanisms are conductive, inductive, capacitive, and electromagnetic. The class presents methods for shielding and filtering noise. The topics include grounding, shielding, electrostatic discharge (ESD), general diagnostics, layout of signal traces, cables, and enclosures. Kim has spent 26 years designing and developing medical, military, and satellite equipment. He co-founded and sold Stimsoft, a medical products company and currently consults in the aerospace industry to develop better processes for design and management. He has written two practical textbooks on product development and is writing or editing three more books. He is the Executive Vice President of the IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society, has published widely, and has four patents with several more pending.
