Due to smaller PCB size and reduced component count, modern electronic circuits are more sensitive than ever to transients and this has led to an increased need for transient protection. Designers are faced with a great challenge in finding a reliable solution in terms of the level of protection required and the ability of the individual components to withstand transients or pulses. Wirewound resistors are most commonly used for surge control and in-rush current protection. This application note discusses the use of Vishay's Z300-C axial cemented wirewound.
