MEMS technologies alleviate many limitations of quartz-based frequency-control designs, but the integration of MEMS into frequency-control and clock products is still characterized as a two-chip solution and a reliance on boutique MEMS foundries. The recent introduction of CMEMS technology builds upon the benefits of MEMS solutions by processing the resonator directly on top of an advanced mixed-signal IC to provide true CMOS+MEMS integration.
