Induction cookers that use electromagnetic-generated heat energy for cooking are about 25 percent more energy efficient than electric cookers, and present an opportunity for greatly lowering household energy consumption. This application note discusses the principles of induction heating and present methods for measuring insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) power losses during turn-off and on-states, which can help improve efficiency during the IGBT design optimization process.
