In 1999, a proposal for next-generation I/O was introduced by Intel, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems (now Oracle). The collective goal was to define an optimal server and storage architecture. The resulting specification, known as System I/O, was released in October 2000. Today, this is known as InfiniBand.
