Multi-core Processing and Virtualization: Enabling Cost Effective Servers
A number of recent technological advances have brought revolutionary change to the computing landscape. Enterprises of all sizes face the challenge of increasing system performance and reliability while lowering costs, and new technologies offer a quantum leap toward those goals: recent steps forward in hardware and software technology help deliver breakthrough performance, power savings, and cost advantages that support larger real-time workloads with fewer servers.
This paper discusses new technology in multi-core computing, system- and processor-level architectures, hardware co-processors, and virtualization. These innovations enable a new generation of servers, which allow enterprises in all industries to handle more sophisticated, demanding tasks at lower cost than would otherwise be possible. The result has been system-level performance increases over the past two years that have substantially outpaced Moore's law, while also decreasing total cost of ownership.
