There are several reasons you might want to access your file storage through a network. Among them: to let several hosts (CPUs) access and manipulate the same files; to share a disk drive between computers, even if the files aren't shared; to locate your file storage separately from the computers (by a distance of feet or miles, for physical security or convenience); to use a higher-performance storage system than you can put inside the computer; and to be able to expand and reconfigure the storage system without opening the computer chassis. This document will give you some basic concepts of networked storage.
