Custom Carriers Maximize the COM Express Advantage
Companies of all sizes work to tightly manage resources to maximize profitability. Many organizations use contractors to manage peak requirements and retain a skilled and focused employee base. This model can increase profitability, but often makes recruitment of outside help necessary for hardware and software design expertise. As an alternative to this, this paper proposes reducing dependence upon custom hardware configurations by using standard building blocks. This can reduce the cost of hardware by taking advantage of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products, as well as reduce dependence upon project-dedicated hardware designers.
The COM Express standard is one means of achieving this solution. Providing integrated combinations of processor, chipset, memory, and other components with specified mechanical, electrical, and thermal requirements, these modules provide a standardized core for custom systems.
