For enterprises delivering Internet and extranet applications, TCP/IP inefficiencies, coupled with the effects of wide area network (WAN) latency and packet loss, conspire to adversely affect application performance. The result of these inefficiencies has inflated the response times for applications, and significantly reduced bandwidth utilization efficiency (ability to "fill the pipe").

This paper provides an overview of the problem and offers a solution—F5's BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager. BIG-IP provides a TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)/IP (Internet Protocol) stack called TCP Express, which is designed to deliver WAN and local area network (LAN) application performance improvements for real-world networks, as well as a high level of control for optimizing TCP communications for mission-critical applications.
