The environmentally sound qualities of many manufactured products today can be traced back to their engineering. As numerous natural oddities attest—record temperatures, increased numbers of severe storms, changing migratory habits—green engineering was not always a primary concern. Now that it is, organizations are discovering that thorough reviews of design effectiveness can result in world-class, environmentally compliant products that enable a pollution-free, healthy environment. And, because of widespread global concern for ecology, these products are often highly profitable.

This paper discusses ways in which engineers and electronics manufacturers can help (and already have helped) to create non-toxic, environmentally friendly products, in order to reduce the carbon footprint of the high-tech industry.
