Connecting together multiple computers to solve a single real-time problem is certainly a very challenging engineering task. An aircraft simulator is an example of one of the most demanding of these real-time applications. This paper addresses some of the unique requirements of distributed computing architectures for simulators, and it summarizes the two major approaches which have been used to date. The concept of a new approachshared-memory networkingis introduced and compared to the traditional approaches.
