Today, more and more information travels over the network. Data intensive applications such as large file transfers, streaming media along with mission-critical transaction based data (bursty traffic) burden the network with millions of frames and packets each second. Users demand information faster and from farther away. The Internet and private Intranets also change bandwidth requirements as the flow of data increases.

So, how do we address these bandwidth and performance issues throughout the network? The traditional approach is to throw more bandwidth at the problem. While this solution is becoming less expensive in the form of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet products, another solution is switching. Segmenting the LAN provides dedicated bandwidth to where it is needed.
