The AdvancedTCA family of specifications (denoted as PICMG 3.x) is a result of the efforts of over 100 companies worldwide. AdvancedTCA was developed as an open platform focused on central office solutions. It provides for enhanced power distribution via redundant -48VDC feeds, shelf management, and 200W of cooling capacity per slot. AdvancedTCA's board size yields significantly more area than CompactPCI through an 8U by 280mm form factor. Data transport is handled across a fabric agnostic backplane with full mesh capability and aggregate throughput exceeding Terabit levels. Ethernet, Infiniband, StarFabric, and PCI Express have already been approved as sub-specifications to overlay the fabric. If you were to start a new program today from the ground up, AdvancedTCA could likely be the architecture of choice.
