Over the next several years the USB flash drive (UFD) and flash card market is expected to grow at a rapid pace of close to 40 percent annually. Initially used primarily as storage media for digital cameras, flash cards are now coming of age as smart storage devices for sophisticated computing devices, especially mobile handsets. Consequently, flash card requirements are changing to meet the demands of this new market. At the same time, USB flash drives are also developing quickly, adding more security applications, such as media players and authentication tokens.

New high-processing-power applications require a high level of security as well as high performance. This article expands on these trends and new applications. It further explores the security and processing requirements of these applications.
