When designing a 3G platform, system or handset, the system design is no longer entirely dependent on the communications stack and radio. 3G handset and systems design needs to take into account the requirements of the applications that will run on those handsets since they now have an impact on the complete system. The integration of multimedia, 2D and 3D graphics is key to a successful design, just as much as interoperability and standards compliance. Most of the considerations described here also apply to multimedia coders and decoders but will not be covered in this article where the focus is set on 2D and 3D graphics technologies.
