ATCA is a set of standards that have been designed for telecom by telecom. It has involved many leading organisations with an interest in the design and manufacture of telecom equipment. ATCA is an evolution of such technologies, taking on the positive aspects of PCI, cPCI, cPSB, IPMI, etc. while adding many new telecom-focused features. The result is a set of open standards which will satisfy the demands of telecom applications for now, and for the foreseeable future. The Advanced telecom Compute Architecture (ATCA or AdvancedTCA) is an important new standard for building telecom systems. Signalling is a very important telecom application. This paper provides a brief introduction to both, and attempts to justify the case for building the latter using the former.
