Wireless appliances capture a significant amount of media attention these days. Sometimes, the latest gadget from Company X is praised as the next best thing to sliced bread, many times even before it reaches the market. In other cases, these devices are seen as threats to personal privacy or major contributors to automobile accidents. Both viewpoints are probably true to some extent. Yet, as engineers we hope to build products that improve the well-being of consumers, and subsequently improve our own economic well-being. The goal of this paper is to help those engineers designing wireless appliances to improve their odds of achieving both goals simultaneously.
