Fundamentals of Choosing LDO and Switching Regulators

More Info +- Less Info

Although low-power DC/DC ICs often don’t get up-front attention and are viewed as commodities -- with selection often left to the last-minute -- the choice does affect performance, cost, efficiency, run time, PC board layout, and even overall product packaging.

Even for DC loads below 1A, developing the power-tree architecture and choosing the appropriate regulator ICs can be confusing. While a switching regulator seems like the obvious choice due to its inherent efficiency, the less-efficient low-dropout regulator (LDO) is still a good choice in many situations.

This course will explore issues including:
•    supply-tree topology
•    input and output voltage range
•    noise
•    efficiency
•    thermal issues
•    ease of use and additional components needed
•    power distribution and physical board layout,
•    application flexibility
•    vendor sourcing and BOM issues
•    design tools and techniques

As in most engineering situations, there is no single "right" answer, and the engineer must consider and balance the many tradeoffs involved in regulator selection and design-in.

I hope you'll like this course! Even if you are not doing power-supply subsystem design, I suspect you'll find this worthwhile. And a properly structured, solid supply is one less thing to worry about in your team's design, development, and debug. Do it right and you won't have frustrating headaches as your design cycle moves forward towards product release. Of course, I welcome your comments and your ideas for follow-up courses.--Bill Schweber

This is a good course for dc power engineer for designing. As as a DC Power Engineer for designing power,I did a project last year, there were a lot of challenge that I faced . Especially for VR solution for low voltage and high current cpu core. How to do a good layout design about providing high current for CPU core and DDR3. Choosing LDOs and Switching Regulators is a challenge for designing power in Intel Sandy Bridge CPU for server platform. By the way, If this course provided by pdf documet will be better.

Though you make some VERY fascinating points, you're going to have to do more than bring up a few things that may be different than what we've already heard. What are trying to say here tubelaunch review http://workingmomreviews.com/tubelaunch-review-need-know/
