The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) is qualified to provide the leadership in developing a global standard for this important new innovation in the world of wireless transactions at the Point of Sale. First, as a standards body and now as a trade association, IrDA has maintained a leadership position in the development of commercially viable wireless data transfer technology since 1993. The intellectual property developed by IrDA has also enabled emerging technologies such as Bluetooth, WAP and 3GPP to solve critical user requirements. The standard is designed to accommodate over 300 million mobile phones, PDAs, POS terminals and other IrDA-enabled devices already in the marketplace today.
